Request or a Greedy bet??

Since childhood I remember people praying to God, wishing for something and offering whatever they can as a token of their faith and respect towards him.
But the story seems to be changing when I hear people say...
"Mera yeh kaam poora ho jaye to main aake Naariyal chadaungi!"
"Main hazoor sahib de darshan karan jaunga bas meri eh dil di muraad poori ho jaye!"

Doesn't that sound like people trying to tempt God by offering him some materialistic thing which again is gifted by him to us? Does he really listens to us when we 'gift' him something?

Shouldn't the situation be otherwise:- A naariyal/ A trip to holy place, as a token of worship and praying for whatever you want, leaving for God to decide what he wants to do later on? :-)

Amrit - that's a reflection of our corrupt society. To get our work done we pay bribe. Here comes the temptation part. This we do, when we are in a conscious state of mind.

Now when people pray to god, they carry the same attitude of bribing the god but here they do it unconsciously.

God will be more than happy if we become a good human being. That will be the best ever offering we can make to god. Afterall if there's anything called God, then we need to understand that it resides in our soul, in our 6 foot body.
cheers'

I agree!!
Liked ur statement when you say 'That will be the best ever offering we can make to god.'

I hope we can make such a offering, but I know whats gonna happen:
Bhagwan main sudhar jaunga, bas is baar mera .....;-)

Well i just have one question, can we really gift anything to GOD... Can we ? lol... As very rightly said by Ashish, this is the reflection of our own corrupt society or i would say the outcome of our own characterstics.. While making deals Human beings oftenly look at the benefit they get... They r not praying, they are actually making a deal with GOD..
Thats a typical Human...

Amrit,
I know its tough but atleast we can start the process. Change is always a time consuming process but it happens that's for sure. So lets get our attitude changed!!!

Ritu,
If you look around wats being done by terrorist. They are using human bombs against the innocents. They simply brainwash and tell the poor guy(or in better terms the stupid suicide bomber) that if you offer your life to Allah you will be welcomed by so called 50 odd fairies in heaven plus your country will rule this world. Isn't it a f@cked up thought. Even after such offerings they are gaining nothing except creating terror.

We are gods own children and just like any other parent, god do not expect anything from us.
The offering can be made in other ways. I call it a PAYBACK POLICY. Give back to society, the positive things that you gained from the same society in the last 20 odd years of your life.

Ashish, Rupinder:
Completely agree with you both on Offering v/s gift. That is why I say it as giving some materialistic thing back to Almighty which is just a particle of what he gave us and is of no importance to him.

Yes Ashish, I am improving slowly. :) In punjabi we call it 'Sukhna mangna' which is like doing something before or/and after your prayer is heard. I like to follow complete cycle..may be 'another' trip or path(pooja) can be done after ur wish is fulfilled, but definitely not as a bet! :-)

Regarding what we can offer to God, I found these lines in Bani:
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ਚਲਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ॥
मनु तनु अरपी आपु गवाई चला सतिगुर भाए ॥
I offer my mind and body, and I renounce my selfishness and conceit; I walk in Harmony with the Will of the True Guru.
I am forever a sacrifice to my Guru, who has attached my consciousness to the Lord. ||7||

and I think this is best and only thing, what we can offer him.
When we 'renounce selfishness and conceit', this could be your 'payback' to society as well!
